Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made the embarrassing claim on Sunday that the sudden increase in violent crime in NYC is due to people being “scared to pay their rent” and definitely not the Democrats recent actions rendering the NYPD ineffective.
“So why is this uptick in crime happening?” Ocasio-Cortez asked.
“Well, let’s think about it. Do we think this has to do with the fact there’s record unemployment in the United States right now? The fact that people are at a level of economic desperation that we have not seen since the Great Recession.”
“Maybe this has to do with the fact that people aren’t paying their rent and are scared to pay their rent, and so they go out and they need to feed their child and they don’t have money so you maybe have to, they’re put in a position where they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry that night.”
“Maybe it’s the fact that unemployment provisions have not been given to [everyone],” Ocasio-Cortez claimed with no evidence to back her claims. “Maybe it’s because the fact that people, some people still haven’t gotten their stimulus checks yet.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s claims that the crime spike is simply due to “people feeding their families” plays dumb to the number of luxury stores that have been looted along with the fact that de Blasio resisted calls from top Democrats and Republicans to deploy the National Guard to restore order and stop the violence and looting.
Nonetheless, the anti-police congresswoman has demanded that the NYPD be entirely defunded and has claimed that the $1 billion dollars of cuts enforced thus far wasn’t “really real.” AOC even accused far-left NYC mayor Bill de Blasio of using “budget tricks” and “funny math” in the calculation.
When asked later to comment on the issue, the congresswoman told viewers: “When people ask me ‘What does a world where we defund the police look like?’, I tell them it looks like a suburb.”
The situation in NYC paints a very different picture of what a world without police looks like, however.
On Saturday, the New York Post reported 15 shootings in 15 hours, just one week after the city saw a bloody July Fourth weekend with 44 shootings and at least eight killed.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said that the increase in crime around the city was causing the city’s justice system to implode.
The congresswoman’s sudden display of concern for the unemployed screams of a political stunt as early on in her young congressional career, the democratic socialist scared away tens of thousands of jobs by forcing a potential Amazon HQ out of her district.
More recently, Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the loss of jobs in the oil industry when prices tanked as a result of the coronavirus. In an effort to harm the country’s reopening efforts, she also demanded that people boycott a return to work post-coronavirus shutdowns.
In her most recent attack on U.S. jobs, AOC has set her sights on a minority owned business, calling for the boycott of Goya Foods – the largest Latino food company in the U.S. after the company’s CEO said the United States was “blessed” to have President Trump.
