Democrats Panic after Independent Candidate Makes Statement on Border

The Democratic primary is shaping up to be incredibly crowded. It seems like there is no end to the jokers who think they can take Trump. But things aren’t looking too good for them, now that Howard Schultz is running as a moderate, liberal Independent. At a recent town hall, he took sides on the border debate. Democrats are in big trouble.

For months, Democrats have worried about Howard Schultz. The former Starbucks CEO has frequently talked about running for president in 2020—as an Independent liberal. With more and more Democrats lurching to the left politically, this might be the right time for someone like Schultz to steal their thunder.

Schultz has been considered a “moderate” liberal. Meaning, his position is far less radical and insane than many Democrats. With ideas that come closer to what every day Americans want, he can steal many votes from the Democratic Party. This can spell disaster for the Democrats, who think Schultz’s presence during 2020 would only secure their defeat—and clinch Trump’s reelection.

But despite urging from many liberals (including groups who threatened to boycott Starbucks), it looks like Schultz is still moving forward with his campaign. This week, he spoke at a town hall event, hosted by Fox News.

During the evening, the issue of the border crisis came up. This was the perfect opportunity for Schultz to express his views on what is going on and what he believes the president should be doing. As a liberal, I’m sure people expected him to join up with the left to bash Trump and ignore the national emergency.

He didn’t.

Independent presidential candidate Howard Schultz slammed Democrats and praised Republicans over the current situation on the southern border during a Thursday night town hall on Fox News…

“Now, the issue that we have to recognize is this. President Trump is correct, and the Republican leadership is correct that we need fierce, strict levels of control on that border to keep bad people from coming in,” Schultz continued. “Illegal immigrants should not come in. I don’t want to get into a wall or anything, but I agree we should fund whatever we need to do to secure the border.” [Source: Daily Wire]

What!? He even said that we should be funding ICE and giving them “all the tools and resources they need.” That is a radically different stance than what we’re used to seeing from anyone close to being liberal.

This shows you that Schultz is playing a very different game than the Democrats. He is trying to position himself as a reasonably-sounding moderate, a role many Democrats used to hold in the past. You might remember that, until Obama’s era, Democrats hated illegal immigration. They knew it took away jobs from working class Americans.

Democrats were strongly opposed to illegal immigrant workers. Yet, for some reason, in recent years they’ve reversed this stance, all but abandoning labor unions and American families.

As a moderate liberal running independent from the Democratic Party, Schultz can say whatever he wants. In fact, he needs to distinguish himself from the rest of the country’s liberals, who clearly lost their moral authority when it comes to this issue.

Democrats right now should be panicking. Schultz is mostly liberal in his stances. While he’ll never win over Trump’s supporters, he has a good chance of winning over Democrat voters and liberals who are sick of the insanity coming from their party.

Let’s face it, there are people who will always vote for liberal candidates, despite the massive successes Trump has won for our country. But plenty of liberal voters are being turned away by Democrats who embrace illegal immigration and terrible policies like the Green New Deal.

This is a prime opportunity for someone like Schultz, who is smart enough to play a moderate and steal the left’s base.

But will it pay off? Will Schultz get enough support to become a real rival to Trump? Or will he at least force Democrats to become more moderate, just to stay relevant in 2020? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
