The Florida Legislature passed a bill banning “sanctuary cities” on Thursday.

The bill passed in the House 68-45 and the Senate 22-18. It now heads to the desk of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has praised such legislation.

It requires “state entities, local governmental entities, and law enforcement agencies to use best efforts to support the enforcement of federal immigration law” and prohibits “restrictions by the entities and agencies on taking certain actions with respect to information regarding a person’s immigration status,” according to the bill’s text.

The bill also authorizes “a law enforcement agency to transport an alien unlawfully present in the United States under certain circumstances.”

The Florida Democratic Party slammed the bill as “Republicans’ deportation and family separation machine.”

“Our state was once a place that welcomed immigrants looking for a better future,” the party tweeted Thursday.

President Trump said last month he was considering sending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities to target Democrats.

“They’re always saying they have open arms. Let’s see if they have open arms,” he said. “The alternative is to change the laws. We can do it very, very quickly, very easily.”
