Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has repeatedly campaigned with members of “the squad” — the group consisting of four first-year Democratic members including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib — and has their full endorsement to win the presidency, but Super Tuesday showed that their endorsement means very little to voters.
Throughout the primary process, Sanders has brought Omar with him to his events and she even appeared the night before the state primary with him in St. Paul, Minnesota, for a rally.
To no avail.
The congresswoman’s home state voted against Sanders and, instead, backed his opponent Joe Biden.
Since getting elected to the Minnesota statehouse in 2016, Omar has been lionized by the media, and after winning her snap bid for Keith Ellison’s congressional seat in 2018, she’s been nothing short of revered. After suffering a heart attack in October of last year, Sanders relied on the endorsement of Omar and fellow socialist superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, with much of the political press attributing his rebound in the polls to their support.
Despite months of campaigning, Omar couldn’t put him over the top in the state or in her home turf. Biden beat Sanders in Hennepin County, which houses Minneapolis and Omar’s district. He also won Ramsey County, which includes the other Twin City of St. Paul, where the Monday night rally with Omar was held.

The congresswoman addressed the result of her state’s voting in a tweet on Tuesday evening.
“Imagine if the progressives consolidated last night like the moderates consolidated, who would have won?” she asked with a tweet that highlighted voter turnout in various precincts.
“That’s what we should be analyzing. I feel confident a united progressive movement would have allowed for us to #BuildTogether and win MN and other states we narrowly lost,” she added.
