Top Cabinet Member Stands By Trump Despite Party Betrayals

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signaled he is standing by President Trump after critics have called for his impeachment following the storming of the Capitol on Wednesday.

“I am proud of what we’ve accomplished — not just in the national security, foreign policy space, which I’ve worked with, but the things that we’ve done with families, the pro-life work that we have done. These are things that will truly be historic. I think history will remember us very well for these things when the books are written,” Pompeo said in remarks to Republican lawmakers and staffers.

“While I think we all think the violence that took place in the place where you all work in the Capitol was tragic, I’ve watched people walk away from this president already. And they are not listening to the American people. Not remotely,” he added.

His comments came after a daylong, private meeting with the Republican Study Committee, Breitbart News reported.

Pompeo also said that the foreign policies under the Trump administration did far more for the world than the policies implemented by the Obama administration.

“We watched eight years of the foreign policy of the previous administration that was fantasy. Fantasy,” said Pompeo. “They would enter into agreements and arrangements that weren’t based on anything with the potential to be lasting, and if America First in foreign policy means anything, it means being realistic.”

Other Republicans, however, have split from the Trump administration following pro-Trump rioters storming the Capitol.

“President Trump has not always chosen the right words,” former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said. “He was wrong with his words in Charlottesville, and I told him so at the time. He was badly wrong with his words yesterday.”

Democrats, meanwhile, have said articles of impeachment against Trump could be drawn up by tomorrow or the next day.

“I think they will be drawn up … tomorrow (Monday),” U.S. House Democratic Whip James Clyburn told CNN. “It may be Tuesday or Wednesday before they are actually taken (to the floor), but I think they will be taken this week.”
