It’s no secret: Barack Obama spent most of his eight years in office cozying up to the communist regime in Cuba of which routinely imprisoned, beat, and killed their own people.
Conversely, in just four years Former President Trump took a hardline on the island communists, slapping them with tariffs and embargoes that handcuffed the regime and allowed for citizens to live safely despite their political affiliation. Trump trashed Obama for his softness on the Cuba commies, highlighting the event where then-president Obama mingled with communist dictator of Cuba Raúl Castro.
“Remember when Obama attended baseball games with the Castros while they imprisoned, beat, and killed the Cuban people,” Trump said in his statement offiering support for the Cubans. He said, “I stand with the Cuban people 100% in their fight for freedom.”

In the last year of Obama’s presidency, he issued a series of policies that “normalized” relations with the communist regime in Cuba. As a result, the dictatorship was emboldened to make over 10,000 politically-motivated arrests in that year alone knowing the American president would do nothing to stop the atrocities.
While Trump was in office, Cuba reported thousands fewer arrest made for political reasons. In 2019, there were less than 3,200 detentions documented — still a an unacceptable number, but a far cry from the 10,000 arrests made during Obama’s reign.
The report added the Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN), an NGO on the island, had documented 359 politically-motivated or arbitrary detentions of political dissidents alone, adding to the 9,484 arrests already made so far in the year.
Earlier in 2016, the Obama family attended a baseball game between the Cuban national team and the Tampa Bay Rays in Havana. The crowd cheered upon Castro and Obama’s entrance into the stadium. The two could be seen laughing, enjoying themselves, even doing the “wave” at one point. Meanwhile, the Cuban Dictator was involved in a politically-motivated scheme to arrest all dissidents and adversaries as the American president sat beside him.
